Experience the Thunder: Epic Encounter with the A-10 Brings KC Campbell's Flying in the Face of Fear Story to Life

Flying in the Face of Fear by Kim "KC" Campbell, Colonel, USAF (Ret) is an inspirational story that recounts her time as a young adult and career as a military pilot. KC tells the story of her early life, the rigorous training she underwent and the critical missions she undertook. Through her narrative, you are drawn to each page, learning not only how KC was able to face fear head-on, but also the lessons she learned about courage and resilience. 

We start the book seeing Kim as a teenager with dreams of attending the United States Air Force Academy. She spent her entire high school career ensuring that her resume of academic success would earn her a spot at the prestigious institution. Faced with several rejection letters, Kim persevered and ultimately earned herself an appointment to the Academy. From early on in her life, we can see that Kim is a highly driven individual, capable of achieving anything to which she sets her mind. This theme carries on throughout her life as we follow her remarkable career not only as a pilot, but as a leader, mother and wife.

One of the most harrowing moments of the book came while Kim, now known as Captain KC "Killer Chick" Campbell, was flying an A-10 Warthog mission over Iraq in 2003. Her aircraft was hit by a surface-to-air missile, which damaged the tail and drained the hydraulic control systems. Demonstrating remarkable skill and composure, KC returned to her base and landed the jet using only the cable-driven backup mode, also known as manual reversion, a feat that earned her a Distinguished Flying Cross. She retired in 2021 at the rank of Colonel after 24 years in the military.

KC's life as an A-10 combat pilot came to life for me recently when I ventured down to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri to witness an A-10 range day! This experience came at a great time as I had just finished reading Flying in the Face of Fear a few days prior. Two pairs of A-10 Thunderbolt IIs based out of Whiteman Air Force Base came to the range to show firsthand what the A-10 can do. Hearing the A-10's GAU-8 Avenger 30mm gatling gun firing for the first time was an experience unlike anything I have ever witnessed. Videos just don't do the intensity of the gun's sound any justice! We were treated to several gun passes as well as a handful of bombing runs. Seeing the A-10s operating in a simulated combat zone gave me a greater understanding of the close air support mission through firsthand exposure to the aircraft and its capabilities. It really brought KC's story to life for me and deepened my appreciation for the courage and skill required in such high-stakes situations. This experience helped me connect with her on a much deeper level. 

KC Campbell’s experiences have influenced my own approach to flying as a private pilot and instrument flight student. Her story underscores the need for aviators to practice meticulous preparation, teamwork and adaptability at all times. The lessons of Flying in the Face of Fear have made me a better pilot as I persevere through difficult training situations and face obstacles with confidence and poise.
