The D-Day invasion of Europe by Allied Forces on June 6, 1944 marked the beginning of the end for the Axis Powers. Soldiers (and Allied gunners!) were no doubt relieved to see aircraft bearing those black and white invasion stripes painted on Allied aircraft flying overhead. These stripes, as seen above on this C-47, were featured on fighters, bombers and cargo aircraft operating over the theater. An interesting anecdote can be found at the following site: http://kalapanapundit.blogspot.com/2006/06/d-day-invasion-stripes.html.
