Greetings from The Aero Experience Team

The Aero Experience is a celebration of Midwest aviation and aerospace achievement. We invite you to join us as we explore the treasures of Midwest aviation through first-hand experiences. Our contributors take turns flying lead, and we are always looking for new destinations. Check in with The Aero Experience frequently to see where we will land today, and then go out and have your own aero experiences!

Mount Vernon Outland Airport Holds Fall Fly-In and Car Show

By Carmelo Turdo Vernon Outland Airport hosted their Wings, Wheels and Rotors fall fly-in and car show last Saturday, attracting a variety of aircraft and a unique collection of autos to the airport on a beautiful Midwest fall day. A new sponsor this year, Bonnie Café, served lunch to hundreds of visitors in their newly remodeled terminal restaurant. Other noticeable changes to the airport grounds include new displays from the Colonel R.D. White Military Museum throughout the terminal and the installation of the Scalewings SW21 Jet mockup at the airport parking entrance. The Aero Experience flew in Saturday morning to visit with our friends in Mount Vernon and provide coverage of this great Midwest Aviation event.

The Aero Experience flew in to Mount Vernon Outland Airport aboard Alex Acevedo's Grumman Tiger, and returned to St. Louis Downtown Airport later in the day aboard Mark Schuler's Nanchang CJ-6. Along with flying in for the $100 hamburger (or buffet in this case), we used the occasion to get some air-to-air coverage for a future story and video. Upon arrival, we met up with our friend, Anita Mack, who flew in with her Piper J-5/HE-1 medical evacuation aircraft.

Other aircraft also flew in throughout the day:

EAA Chapter 1155 offered Young Eagle flights to youth aged 8-17:

The car show, featuring the Street Outlaws of Southern Illinois, is a favorite feature of the annual Wings, Wheels and Rotors event:

The "Rotors" portion of the event included a static display and flying demonstration of the Bell UH-1H utility helicopter operated by Kash Helicopter Services based at the airport. This helicopter can be used for agricultural applications and other sling-load specialty operations.

The Aero Experience thanks Airport Manager Chris Collins, EAA Chapter 1155, Bonnie Café and everyone who contributed to making the 2019 Wings, Wheels and Rotors a great Midwest Aviation event.
