The
Aero Experience continues our coverage of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2019,
sponsored by Elite Aviation, with a look at another legendary military jet featured
in Boeing Plaza - the Fairchild Republic A-10C Thunderbolt II. Also often dubbed the Warthog, the A-10 has
served gallantly during the Cold War and armed conflicts from the Gulf War to
the present war zones. The jet serves as a flying tank, using its 30mm cannon
and variety of weapons to destroy armored vehicles and other ground
targets. It was built with redundant
systems and an armored cockpit to increase survivability when damaged by ground
fire. The Warthog’s service life has been extended several times as there has
yet to be designed a satisfactory replacement. The aircraft featured here was
from the 122nd FW, Indiana Air National Guard based in Fort Wayne.
