Area Residents Get Sample of Aviation Opportunities at Midwest Airport Fun Days
By Fred Harl
Visitors to the Midwest Airport Fun Days event last weekend at St. Louis Downtown Airport were offered a number of opportunities to experience aviation in one convenient location. Aircraft from the World War II "Greatest Generation" were on display, and local aviation and aerospace organizations were available to provide expert advice in the fields of RC aircraft, model rocketry, para-gliders and many others. Local flight schools offered Discovery Flights at discounted rates, and the EAA Chapter 64 provided Young Eagle Flights for youth aged 8-17. Local pilots offered rides in their vintage aircraft, and airshow pilot Patrick McAlee flew his Pitts Special "The Blue Demon" several times each day for the entertainment of the crowd. The event's host, The Greater St. Louis Air & Space Museum, conceived the event as a community outreach as part of its mission to educate the public about area aviation history and support STEM programs in the region. Here are some scenes from Midwest Airport Fun Days, Volume 1.
